Moreton Bay
Moreton-Bay-catchment-map
Catchment Facts
  • Total area: 1,523km2
  • Many of SEQ’s major rivers and creeks flow into Moreton Bay
  • Area of all catchments discharging into Moreton Bay:22,000km2
  • Moreton Bay is enclosed on three sides but well flushed in the eastern and central zones
  • The toxic cyanobacterium Lyngbya majuscula is a threat to the ecosystem health of Moreton Bay
Marine results
C- Deception Bay
  • Elevated nutrients and phytoplankton abundance in southern section
  • Reduced water clarity in northern section
  • Decrease in compliance of some water quality parameters due to change in guidelines
  • Stable seagrass meadows in northern section but increased Lyngbya coverage
B- Central Bay
  • Slight decrease in water clarity and increase in nutrients and phytoplankton abundance at sites closest to the coast
  • Decrease in Report Card grade due to more stringent water quality guidelines
  • Stable seagrass meadows and coral communities present in the south
D+ Bramble Bay
  • Improved water clarity and nitrogen levels throughout particulary adjacent to Brisbane
  • Continued low sewage nitrogen signal throughout particulary close to the coastline
  • Highly impacted habitats: no seagrass or coral communities remain
B- Waterloo Bay
  • Good water quality throughout: improved water clarity and phytoplankton abundance
  • Increase in compliance of some water quality parameters due to change in guidelines
  • Slight increase in sewage nitrogen signal at some sites close to the coast
  • Intact natural habitats present; seagrass meadows and coral communities
A Eastern Bay
  • Excellent water quality throughout, but a more stringent water quality guideline has caused lower compliance
  • Intact natural habitats remain; deep and stable seagrass and healthy and diverse coral in some parts
  • Reduced occurrence of Lyngbya
A Eastern Banks
  • Excellent water quality throughout
  • Intact natural habitats present; deep and stable seagrass and healthy and diverse coral in some parts
  • Lyngbya present at the same extent as in 2006
D Southern Bay
  • Improved phytoplankton abundance and water clarity closest to the coast
  • Report Card grade increased due to less stringent water quality guidelines in 2007
  • Shallow and unstable seagrass meadows in main channel closest to the coast but expansive meadows in Canaipa Passage
  • Decreased presence of Lyngbya
